Norris Public Power District participates in the Nebraska Rural Electric Youth Energy Leadership Camp by sponsoring up to four students to attend an educational and recreational camp each summer.
Eligibility
High school students, served electrically by Norris Public Power District, who are currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade are eligible to attend a five-day camp to be held at Camp Comeca in Cozad, Nebraska.
The camp involves high school-aged men and women from Nebraska and Wyoming whose farms and homes are served by one of the Nebraska Rural Electric Association’s member systems. The District is a member of the Nebraska Rural Electric Association.
Leadership
The camp offers leadership training, environmental awareness, character building and social interaction while teaching participants about energy generation, electric safety and careers in the rural electric program. The camp is intermingled with fun activities, including a volleyball tournament, a talent show, canoeing, dancing and tours of Gerald Gentleman Power Station, a coal-fired power plant near Sutherland and Kingsley Hydro-Electric Power Plant at Lake McConaughy near Ogallala.
Leadership is stressed when students compete to win a free trip to Washington, D.C. as ambassadors or return to the next year’s camp as a junior counselor. Students selected to attend Youth Energy Leadership Camp will receive an all-expense paid trip, including transportation to and from camp by Norris Public Power District.
